Description | This file contains material on the exhibition by 'Dixie Rebs with Dave Hampshire' titled 'Our Way of Rockin', Cockpit Gallery, 28 Mar - 3 May 1984.
It includes 2 copies of the exhibition poster, exhibition press release and some photographic prints. The material notes that the exhibition was a collaboration between the Dixie Rebs and Dave Hampshire, a photographer. The Dixie Rebs describe themselves as 'Rockabillies' [the music and youth sub-culture].
The project started in 1981 and was completed in 1984. The work was produced by Dave Hampshire, Tony Singh, Edmun Warral and Steve Yeoman. The prints contain photomontages that were used as exhibition panels. Some exhibition panels describe in the Dixie Rebs' own words the process of putting together the exhibition. They also talk about their own lives. They mention that some portrait shots were taken at the studio at Cockpit, and some using Cockpit's camera.
The names of the Dixie Rebs are detailed in the exhibition panels as 'Aaron'/'Dixie', 'Johnny Reb', 'General Lee'. One of the photographs shows three of the band in front of a sign for the Mozart Estate, City of Westminster.
There is an extra photographic print in the file, credited to Chris Steele-Perkins, with an annotation in pencil, 'Camerawork no. 41'. |
