Title'Homeworking : Time For Change', Cockpit Gallery Holborn, 1985
DescriptionThese two folders contain material on the exhibition for 'Homeworking: Time for change': An exhibition on homeworking today’, produced by the Cockpit Gallery and with the London Wide Homeworking Group, 1985. This is a new project which built on the work of a previous exhibition [see CPG/2/5 100 Years of Homeworking, 1982].

The first folder contains prints and transparencies of photographs used in the exhibition and reproductions of the collaged exhibition panels about the experience of working from home for women and the challenges of labour organising, with photographs, text, and newspaper cuttings. some of the prints are stamped on the back, 'Cockpit Gallery, ILEA Tape & Drama Centre, Princeton St., London. There is text on the panels in multiple language scripts, appearing to record first hand experiences of women working from home. The introductory panel contains translation credits to ILEA Translation Unit, Gairika Gupta, Vijey Rattan; Photography is credited to Annie Silverleaf, Helena Pugh, Martie Voik, Kranti Nantlamwar, Beryl Graham; Cartoons by Francis Boyle, Liz Mackie.

Also a short text introducing the history of the exhibition, 'This is part of an exhibition produced in 1982 by the 'Women in History Group' based at the History & Social Sciences Teachers Centre. The group included Carol Adams who was warden of the centre at that time. It has been toured by the Gallery since March 1982. In June 1984 it was borrowed for the National Conference on Homeworking. The National Steering Group on Homeworking asked the Gallery to produce a new exhibition dealing with contemporary Homeworking, since so little visual material was available in this country. This is how the new exhibition came to be produced'. [this was found in the folder relating to the 1982 exhibition but appears to relate to this exhibition instead, so has been moved here]

The second folder contains posters for the exhibition, 3 copies of the press release, press cuttings and related journal articles. Press cuttings are from ILEA Contact, the Guardian, City Limits, Spare Rib, Asian Times, Bulletin d'Information Hebdomadaire, Agence Femmes Information, France, 1985; 'Black Arts in London, 1-15 Dec 1985'; 'Outwrite' Women's Newspaper, issue 8, November 1982. One photocopy of two press cuttings relating to a book published about Homeworking, both dated July 1986.

Photocopy of a paper by Swasti Mitter, titled, 'Industrial restructuring and manufacturing homework: immigrant women in the UK clothing industry' published 1 October 1985, in 'Capital and Class', Volume 9 Issue 3, Winter 1985. Issue No. 4 of 'Mukti', Autumn 1985, a quarterly Asian Women's magazine, including an article by Bindu Trivedi titled, 'Homeworkers or "Slaves"? 'Asian Women Homeworkers - Smashing the myths'. Several photocopies of the article are also in the folder. A photocopied article from 16 Dec 1983, which appears to be a set of hand-outs or a print of slides for a talk accompanying an article by Swasti Mitter titled, ‘Homeworking on a Global Scale - a New Strategy of the Multinationals' [possibly an earlier version of the research later written up in the 1985 article in Capital and Class].
