TitleKaffe Matthews - Sonic Bed
DescriptionKaffe Matthews’ Sonic Bed, the first in a series that she has since continued, is a large wooden tank with polished wooden sides, containing a 12 channel sound system embedded in the walls and mattress. Visitors to the installation were invited to lie in the bed, in effect invoking strangers to get into bed with each other. Matthews composed specific sound works for the piece described as, ‘4D sound pieces [that] vibrate through and around the body. The music is architectural but temporal, exploring bioresonance and its particular combinations of frequencies.’ The Sonic Bed represents one aspect of Matthews’ ongoing research into ‘Music for Bodies’ and whilst unfortunately no audio documentation of this event remains, Matthews’ developmental processes and the construction of the bed are documented, including the max/MSP processing used in the composition.
In 2005 Matthews received the NESTA Dreamtime Fellowship to develop her project Music For Bodies and subsequently of the Electra Her Noise commission, Sonic Bed has been recreated in Shanghai, Taipei, Marfa Texas, Quebec and Stirling, Scotland and was awarded a Distinction in Digital Musics at Prix Ars Electronica, 2006.
