Description | The volume was produced for the second annual dinner of the Institute of Printers and Kindred Trades of the British Empire to mark printing arts and crafts and contains examples of these on colour and black and white plates. The frontispiece is in an art nouveau style, as are several of the plates. Each plate has the works name and artist, many together with the process used for reproduction. They were supplied by members of the Institute, who are credited on each plate. Some pages have tissue inserts to protect raised plates. There is also a list of members. The Institute was established in Jun 1898 to represent printing and kindred trades.
The plates include lithographs, block printing, lace printing, granotype printing, colourtype process, reproduced photographs, 3 colour processes and half-tone printing. They cover a wide variety of subject matter: the Royal Family; country and social scenes; political cartoons; works of art; historical subjects; animals; text pages; the printers' almshouses, Wood Green, London; ; portraits; still lifes; menu of The Savage Club Dinner, Hotel Cecil, London; bank note; International Press and Printing Exhibition, Crystal Palace, London; and a history of type.
