DescriptionFile contains copies of unsigned letters from Stanley Kubrick:
- To Dr Antonio Petrucci, Venice Biennale, covering letter for print of film ‘Shape of Fear’ for entrance into festival, July 21st 1952.
- To Mrs Cowles, sending her a quote about ‘Shape of Fear’ by poet Mark Van Doren. Kubrick wants Mrs Cowles to see the film. July 6th 1952.
- To Mr Van Doren, Thanking him for his generosity re the above quote. July 5th 1952.
- Letter to Kubrick from Antonio Petrucci informing him that ‘Shape of Fear’ was entered for the 3rd International Exhibition of the Scientific Film and Art Documentary (La Biennale di Venezia) and that a copy of the decisions of the juries has already been sent. A diploma of participation is also being sent. September 19th 1952.
- Letter to Kubrick from Alice Hope Brewer, asking for photographs and also for a part in a movie. January 26th 1953.
- To Mr Van Doren asking for a quote about ‘Shape of Fear’. June 28th 1952.
- To Mr Burstyn (Joseph) from Antonio Petrucci (see above) acknowledging the screening of ‘Shape of Fear’ and asking what he should do with the print. Sept 20th 1952. The film was screened at the Palazzo del Cinema of the Lido di Venezia, Aug 18th, 1952 at 10am.
- Letter to Kubrick from Peter A Mayer offering his and his wife’s assistant with any future production plans. Oct 28th 1952.
- Letter to Kubrick from Peter Mayer with advice about filming in Mexico and suggesting Oscar Dancigers as a potential producer. Sept 15, 1952.
- Letter to SK from Mildred Fins praising Fear and Desire. April 1st 1953.
- Three letters to Kubrick from Wally [Veevers?] 1950 – two undated. He’s encouraging Kubrick to read Joseph Conrad, warning Kubrick about Hollywood “I would hesitate quite a good deal before exposing myself to the kind of epic frustration involved in introducing reality to Hollywood.” And he’s talking of coming to NY because he’s infatuated by a woman (unnamed)
- Letter to Kubrick from Dick Powell insisting that a cut scene be reinstated in Fear and Desire? Undated
- Thank you letters to Kubrick while he was at LOOK magazine, from Lou R Maxon & Aron M Mathieu, 1949.
- Four Letters (Sept 1952 – Nov 1952) to Kubrick from J M Dent & Sons offering rights to Conrad’s Freya of the Seven Seas, End of the Tether & Almayer’s Folly for £5000 each. Optioned until end of October. Kubrick didn’t buy the rights. He was originally interested in Chance & Nostromo which had already been sold.
- Congratulations letter to Kubrick from Taft High School (Robert B Brodie – principal) April 1st 1953.
- Unsigned letter to Fay [last name unknown] about the “the manner in which ‘Fear and Desire’ has been put on the shelf.” And questions why Canadian distribution hasn’t been fully exploited. March 1st 1954.
- Letter to Kubrick from Alice Brewer Nov 7th 1952 thanking him for photographs.
- Letter to Kubrick from Tom Sawyer regarding the time of his ‘Freedoms Foundation’ award. 20th April 1951.
- Letter to Kubrick fro Tom Ryan of NY Times – space didn’t permit them to using his picture. 17th Jan 1951.
- Letter to Kubrick from Tom Orchard from RD-DR Corporation (Reader’s Digest on the Screen) Day of the Fight is unsuitable for theatrical release.
- Letter to Kubrick from Rex Carlton of Laurel Films offering a 33 1/3rd investment deal for film of Ibsen’s ‘Enemy of the People’. Aug 8th 1950
- Handwritten ‘catch-up’ letter to Stanley and Toba from Frank [last name unknown] Undated.
- Handwritten letter to SK from Ken apologising for not being in NY for Dubbing. Undated and film/recording not mentioned.
- Another letter from Ken (above) complaining to SK about the unreasonable expectations of him regarding coming to NY at short notice for dubbing.
- Letter to Kubrick from JT Gwynne offering him use of his wooded land in NY for filming. Dec 30th 1950.
