TitleBarry Lyndon
DescriptionDirected, produced and written by Stanley Kubrick. Barry Lyndon is a costume drama based on William Makepeace Thackeray's 'The Luck of Barry Lyndon'. Filmed mainly in Ireland, the story follows the life of Redmond Barry, played by Ryan O'Neal. Filming lasted some 300 days and took place between Spring 1973 and early 1974. Released on 18 December 1975, it had modest commercial success but was praised for its technical innovations and went on to win four Oscars for best cinematography, best art direction, best costume design and best musical score.

Among the more notable technical achievements, Kubrick wanted to film using pure candlelight and to do so the production team had to use a specially adapted camera with a 'super-fast 50mm f/0.70 lenses developed by Zeiss for use by NASA in the Apollo moon landings.

Material in the collection includes an extensive amount of research documentation including photographs of possible locations as well as notes and photographs of life in the 18th Century. Also included are art department research, awards, production paperwork, audio-visual tapes, laser discs and vinyl records of the soundtrack, sound track costumes and properties, distribution documents, distribuition and publicity photographs and slides.
