Title'Fighting Spirit', [21 Feb - 22 Mar 1989, Cockpit Gallery Holborn]
DescriptionTwo folders containing material relating an exhibition, ‘Fighting Spirit - Women and Martial Arts’, an exhibition of photography by Maggie Murray, 21 February - 22 March 1989, Cockpit Gallery.

Promotional material includes the exhibition press release and an advertisement of workshop sessions in self-defence for girls. There are also 4 sample print 4 x 6 inch postcards advertising the exhibition at Cockpit Gallery; one larger postcard advertising the touring exhibition. Press cuttings from 1989 including Women Focusing; City Limits; 7 days; The Hampstead Post, First Glance. There are prints, negatives and transparencies related to the exhibition, including: 42 large format black and white press prints. 20.2 x 25.4 cm, credited on the back © Murray/Format; 29 pages of black and white contact prints. One page of which is of images of visitors at the exhibition in the gallery.

21 strips of black and white 35mm negatives, some of which show visitors to the gallery during the exhibition, some doing self-defence moves.

[The other sheet may be for a different exhibition, as it appears to be different images in an installation in a different space, including some that appear to have been taken in the United States - it shows exhibition panels, and one installation wall shows the text, 'Film and Photo League' and another shows 'Feature Group Project: Harlem Document'];

9 strips of 35mm colour negatives and 33 colour prints 4 x 6 inch [10.16 x 15.24 cm] documenting the exhibition panels; 39 mounted 35mm colour slides. [These appear to be possibly by a different photographer, but many are also pictures of women practicing martial arts.]

There are also two slides that have been annotated 'Coreen Simpson, Trans T.,' which appear to show an exhibition installation of 3 photographs by photographer Coreen Simpson - but it is not clear these were taken at Cockpit. The other slides have been mounted by Joe's Basement, London. Possibly the slides were brought together like this for the purpose of an artist's talk, or for research, or by error].

11 strips of 35mm colour negatives and 30 colour prints 4 x 6 inch [10.16 x 15.24 cm] documenting self-defence workshops held in the gallery for young girls [colour negatives for these images are also present].
