1944 Education Act reformed schools in Britain and under the act smaller technical schools would be merged to form larger institutions that could meet the needs of more students. The act directly led to the merger of the LSPKT and LCCSPEL.
1949 The London School of Printing and Graphic Arts is formed after the merger of London County Council School of Photo-Engraving and Lithography (Bolt Court) and the London School of Printing and Kindred Trades. Some students of both schools had been attending each others classes on a bi-weekly or weekly basis, depending on their course of study due to the schools' similar interests and so they could use each others facilities. The merger was somewhat unpopular with students and staff of both schools. The new formed school continued to use the LSPKT and LCCSPEL existing premises.
1949 London County Council annouces plans house LSPGA into a new singular building at South Bank. This area at South Bank that they hoped to use had been used for the Festival of Britain exhibition in 1951. The site, however, was needed for a new Shell building instead so the school's new site had to change. A number of sites were suggested and rejected due to the cost, unavailability, inadquate size or inaccessibility
1949-1951 The school operated out of two sites, with four classes taught at at 6 Bolt Court, LCCSPEL's site and the other four at 61 Stamford Street, LSPKT's site.
1951 Relocated its Bolt Court teaching to the Old Daily Mirror building at Back Hill, Clerkenwell.
1956 The school's governors agreed to the offer of a 2.3 acre site in Elephant and Castle, to build a new campus, which was part of a larger development of Elephant and Castle. They partly agreed to the site due to its transport connections.
1962 Relocates to its new custom built Elephant and Castle site. The building was officially opened in 1964. |
