Description | The collection consists of examples of printed work which Westwood gathered. Materials include many posters, examples of typography, documents on the teaching of printing, menu cards and programmes, book dustjackets and tourist maps.
The main bulk of the collection is of works printed and used in England however there is material which Westwood collected from Zurich as well.
The collection includes items by well known designers such as Robert Fenton and Tom Eckersley.
As well as reflecting fashions in design the items also reflect social trends for example, many posters advertise pursuits for tourists and show the locations social highlights, architecture and fashion. |
Individual or organisational biography | John Westwood [1919-?] was Head of Design at Her Majesty's Stationary Office, 1960-1978. Throughout his career he collected examples of good printing and design. He was especially interested in travel and the collection includes a large number of posters for organisations such as Transport for London and British Railways. Westwood also felt an affinity to Zurich and collected items relating to the city. |
