DescriptionThe 1944 Education Act established the need for national colleges to serve the needs of industry including for food and technology. The National College of Food Technology was established by the Ministry of Education in 1951 to provide advanced technological education for the food industry. It was the successor of Smithfield College.

The National College was governed by a Board of Governors, with each Governor representing various interested parties. The Board of Governors took control of the college on 1st September 1951 and enrolment for classes beginning on 3 September 1951. In 1951 it was located at Eagle Court, London EC1. It seems to have been affiliated with or later merged with the College of Distributive Trades sometime before 1980.
