| Title | Smithfield Meat Trades Institute |
| Description | Smithfield Institute was a Junior Technical College that existed from around 1915. From 1931 it was under direct London County Council jurisdiction and was renamed the London County Council Meat Trades Institute. In 1931 its Principal was Walter H. Nevell and the Institute was based at Saffron Hill, Holborn, London. Smithfies the school was damaged by enemy aircraft during World War Two. Around 1947, possibly after the passing of the 1944 Education Act, it was renamed London County Council Smithfield College of Food Technology.
On September 1951, it was renamed the National College of Food and Technology as there were calls to form a National College. The new national college was governed by a Board of Governors. Before 1980 it merged with the College of Distributive Trades, although the exact date is not clear. Even after the merger it seems the food department at the College of Distributive Trades continued to be known as Smithfield, Smithfield Institute and Smithfield College recognising its past and connections to the food market.
