| Description | This file contains general office documents filed roughly in chronological order and spanning 5 years of LMC activity. More or less half of the documents were produced at the Lafone House office whilst the other half was produced at 60 Farringdon Rd. office.
The majority of the documents are correspondence with funding bodies such as the London Arts Board, the Jerwood Foundation, the Arts Council of England, the Contemporary Music Network Promoter's Scheme, Visiting Arts News and the Foundation for Sport and the Arts.
There are also various proposals for events to be produced by the LMC, minutes from meetings with different funding bodies, correspondence with the MELA Foundation in New York City about a donation the LMC made to them, contracts with the BBC for music sessions with musicians who visited the United Kingdom for LMC events.
Of particular interest is a Memorandum of Association for the London Musicians' Collective Limited from the Companies Acts 1948 to 1980, dated 1 March, 1981 (witnessed by Sarah Anne Bean) and correspondence between the London Arts Board and Tim Hodgkinson about the 'Live & Eclectic' events held at the Ministry of Sound and an internal document entitled 'How to run a concert' which explains how to put on a gig.
Worth highlighting is the document that gives this file its title: the LMC's response to a document entitled "'Striking a New Note': a review of new music in England (1996)", a consultative green paper on new music issued by the Arts Council of England in collaboration with the Regional Arts Board.
The LMC's response is structured into the following sections -
1. The current state of improvised musics in Britain: our view.
2. Outline proposals for action.
3. Conclusion. with Appendices:
1. Press cuttings about recent LMC activity, LMC publications and publicityexamples.
2. The aesthetic argument for improvisation; distinction between tenets of improvisation and current activity in the realm of jazz; some published profiles of major figures and other articles.
3. Letters of support, list of signatories to this document.
All of the paperwork around this document is also included in the file including all the letters of support from the diffferent LMC members. There are also two photocopied versions of the LMC's response and the letters of support from LMC members.
