TitleWar Office Correspondence Courses for members of H.M. Forces in Composing
DescriptionRecords relating to Fenton's teaching of members of the British Military on a Correspondence Course: Composing during World War Two. Fenton volunteered to teach the courses. Fenton helped select what how and what should be taught on some of the courses such as on the Letterpress Machine Work Course. The courses may have been taught at distance, with students stationed at their respective barracks and sending in their work for Fenton to review, mark and provide feedback for. Students had to already have some experience in the printing industry, for some classes three to four years pre-existing expeience, to be eligible to apply. The courses enabled serving military members to increase and upkeep their skills in the Printing Industry, whilst serving in World War Two. For the Course, Fenton was provided with books and a syllabus by the War Office who organised the courses. It seems that Fenton volunteered to teach the course and was paid wages via the War Office for this.

Records include details of attendees of the course, students grades, marks, work, the syllabus, notes, specimens of work and correspondence concerning this. In late 1943, Fenton was asked to return the books and teaching materials he borrowed for the course by the Services Central Book Depot, however, Fenton had not received any notice that he would no longer be teaching it. Records demonstrate Fenton did continue teaching the course until late 1946 as Fenton was grading course students work and providing them feedback until this time.

Some of the courses Fenton taught as part of this were:
-Composing Intermediate Grade
-Composing Advanced Grade
-Letterpress Machine Work Intermediate Grade
-Bookbinding section I and II
-Printers' and Bookbinders' Warehouse Work
-Lithograph section I and II
