| Description | Correspondence, memoranda, notes and interview transcripts concerning the filming of the Prologue. Made in 1966, this ten minute documentary comprised a series of 21 interviews with leading scientists who talked of the Universe, the possibility of extra-terrestrials existing and the future for Mankind in space. Intended to form the opening sequence to the film, the prologue was eventually not used. Contributors included writer and academic Isaac Asimov, mathematician Jack Good, physicist Freeman Dyson, anthropologist Margaret Mead and astronomers Fred Whipple and Sir Bernard Lovell. Others who were asked to take part, but declined, were the German rocket engineer with NASA Wernher Von Braun and American astronaut John Glenn. Included are letters between the scientists and Roger Caras, assistant to Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke, with their letters of agreement or refusal, along with other such documents as the lists of questions to be asked in the interviews, notes on the hiring of film crew and equipment, travel arrangements and film production schedules. There are also transcripts of the interviews made. |
