[In 1940 Dickinson began making films for the Minstry of Information [MOI] and Ministry of Labour as part of a propaganda effort during the Second World War, after playing an active role in the move to prevent British cinemas from closing during that time. His first MOI film, made with Desmond Dickinson, Donald Bull and Sidney Cole, was 'Westward Ho', a short propaganda film to encourage and give an understanding of the importance of the evacuation of children. Dickinson [Thorold] went on further to make 'Miss Grant Goes to the Door', 'Yesterday is Over Your Shoulder', and the feature film, 'Next of Kin', as well as writing scripts and gathering ideas for further projects, for example, 'The Horse Shoe Nail', which was never realised. Dickinson was then asked to take the role of Chief of Film for the Army Kinematograph Service [AKS], during which time he supervised the making of 17 military training films. Under the AKS Carol Reed's film, 'The New Lot' was made, with Dickinson acting as Production Controller.]
