Description | Eckersley designed a number of book covers for commercial publications: 'The Benteen-Goldin Letters on Custer and His Last Battle', featuring a negative positive image of Custer in black and white on a gold background [see TE/3/3]; 'The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire', featuring a photographic image of a roman head that is broken in parts, 1963. A shadow head of purple is at an angle over the photograph; 'Coleridge to Matthew Arnold' for the Nineteenth-Century Studies series, featuring a photograph of Coleridge on the left, and of Arnold on the right. They are divided by strips of greens and blues; 'Animals on Parade', was illustrated throughout by Eckersley. The cover features a menagerie of animals in muted tones that appear sponged on. The last cover is for the catalogue [see TE/5/1] for Eckersley's 'His Graphic Work' exhibit at London College of Communication in Nov 1994. The cover features a stylised tulip about to bloom in bright pink, blue and yellow on a black background. The same design is used in TE/2/1/5. |
