Description | ‘Gifs = Resistance’ 1 .pdf statement. 1 .mp4 video file.
Katy Jalili has created a series of .gifs and a statement as a response to the oppression they feel for their visual expression of gender as well as their racial identity. They say this is a way of “poking fun” at the situation, to feel empowered and distance themselves from the negativity they face on a daily basis. The gifs feature captions including “Tired of white men and their white voices”, “Are you a boi or a gurl?” and “Appropriating white culture”. As well as this statement they have submitted a video titled “Surviving Art School: A guide for Brown, Trans, Queer and tired art students” which features a series of gifs detailing the frustration they feel towards non-accepting, uneducated and offensive people and the issues queer people of colour have to face.
