DescriptionPaintings and portraits concerning social and working life in the 18th and 19th Century.
1. The first file shows pictures of sporting events such as images of horse race meetings and horses, hunt meetings and shooting parties as well as pictures of leisure such as scenes of partying, the Palmerston and Donnybrook fairs, London theatres, dinner parties, people gambling and smoking and women and children in gardens. Also included are agricultural scenes such as village landscapes, cattle returning at evening and farmers bargaining for sheep. There is also a picture of a court of sessions, a fortune teller in a house and an article about the state of the Church and the Universities in Britain in the 18th Century.
2. The second shows military scenes, plans of London and a view of Westminster Abbey, and a series of pictures of a historic tale in Germany.
3. The third shows pictures from Europe including prints of Dusseldorf, a Paris ball, the opera, a street scene in Warsaw, Koenigstert, Jena, Baden-Baden and Hanover.
4. The fourth shows pictures of English sporting prints, a reproduction of the page in the log book of HMS Euryalus recording Nelson's famous signal at the Battle of Trafalgar, 'England expects that every man will do his duty', an unlucky gambler, frost on the Thames, the Grosvenor Hunt, Moscow, English sporting prints, the Battle of the Nile, the entrance of George IV at Holyroodhouse, Ascot races and the King and Queen off to launch a naval warship.
