ActivityClaire Grey studied Fine Art at Coventry School of Art before undertaking the Art Teachers training course at Goldsmiths College, University of London, in 1972-3, and staying there as a tutor the following year. From 1974 she taught photography part time in a London secondary school, while also doing freelance photography work.

She became involved in the work of the Cultural Studies team at the Cockpit Arts workshop in 1978 and contributed to various issues of Schooling and Culture between then and 1984. She was a member of the editorial group on issues 7 and 10 on gender and education, and made the photomontages for issues 10 and 11.

From 1982 to 86 she was a part time tutor on the PGCE course at Goldsmiths College. She was exhibitions officer at the Cockpit Gallery between 1984 and 1986 and lecturer at the Cockpit Arts Workshop from 1987-1989.

During this period she was involved in helping to produce the 'Keeping in View' exhibition as part of the ILEA Women’s History week and the Homeworking exhibition in 1985. She helped to organise the Hang-Ups review exhibition in 1986, and Who’s Zoomin Who in 1987. In 1988 she collaborated on the 'Down But Not Out' exhibition along with the book of the same name published in 1994.
She was on the photography advisory group of the Arts Council from 1988 to 1992.

She was a contributor to 'Family Snaps, The Meanings of Domestic Photography, edited by Jo Spence and Pat Holland, in 1991 and the book 'What can a woman do with a camera?' in 1995. From 1989 she was a lecturer in photography, film and video production at Kingsway College, and shared the role of head of the Photography and Media Department for several years. In 1996 she studied for an MA in Photography: History and Culture at the London College of Printing. Claire retired from teaching in 2009 and since then she has been pursuing her interest in the uses of domestic photography in genealogy and local history.
