Whilst all of the comics maintain Clowes' style, some are printed in colour whilst others are in black and white. The review on the back cover by The New York Times notes Clowes' work as an exploration of "the tedium and mystery of Contemporary American Life". The cover of the anthology uses comic book panelling in its design, and elements such as pricing and the barcode are incorporated into this. 1998
