The 35mm half-frame colour slides were for pre-production research. Research from Huntsville and Houston.

[These slides are possible research for the designing of sets in the Space Station 5 and the Conference Room on the moonbase.]
[At the NASA centres Fred Ordway III and Ray Lovejoy took shots for reference material showing a futuristic command base and future hardware. Among this reference there were not many space craft shots and Stanley Kubrick wrote to Fred Ordway saying they needed "hardware, hardware, hardware". This reference was confirmed to David Larson, when researching the making of 2001, by Con Pederson, Doug Trumbull and Malcolm Kafetz who were all working on 2001 in 1965]
