Cockpit Theatre and Cockpit Arts Workshop were run and funded by Inner London Education Authority. Cockpit Gallery, Holborn: Established by Cockpit Arts Workshop in 1978, in Princeton Street, Holborn. Department of Cultural Studies: a rebranding of some of Cockpit Arts Workshop activities, and later one team within Cockpit Arts Workshop Schooling and Culture magazine: produced by the Department of Cultural Studies at Cockpit Arts Workshop Greater London Arts Assocation: additional funder for Cockpit Gallery, Holborn Greater London Council: funder for Cockpit Gallery, Holborn In 1972 a Visual Team was established at Cockpit Theatre, Gateforth Street, Marylebone, NW8, to work in relation to performing Arts/Art Events. In 1974 the Art Department was established, which included development of secondary school Art teaching, to include contemporary media, and provide historical and theoretical background as well 1978, the Art Department moves to the Drama and Tape Centre building, Holborn, and is rebranded the Department of Cultural Studies (inspired by the teachings of Stuart Hall and others). Cockpit Gallery, Holborn is established there, with grant aid from the Greater London Arts Association. They produced a range of photography exhibitions which were designed to touring, based on the model established by the Photography Workshop, Half Moon Photography Workshop and Camerawork journal. Many of Cockpit's exhibitions were developed collaboratively with teachers and students in schools, with the aim of bringing photography skills into the classroom. Many artists and educators volunteered or worked for Cockpit at different times and in different capacities. When photographer Jo Spence left Camerawork, she worked for a time at Cockpit as well as exhibiting with them. A number of the touring exhibitions developed by the Photography Workshop and Jo Spence were later made available through Cockpit's touring exhibitions service. In 1990 when ILEA was abolished, the Gallery closed.
