Jill Posener studied in theatre, becoming a playwright. She was a member of Gay Sweatshop theatre company in 1976. She was their first female member. She wrote the play Any Woman Can. This was the first female written play that Gay Sweatshop put on. Posener started getting into photography in the 1980s. She used photography to protest against Section 28. She also used street photography to capture graffiti and defy conventional norms. Her photography spans feminist, lesbian, political, anti-consumerist, erotic, and sexual themes. Two books feature her photos: Spray it Loud (1982) and Louder Than Words (1987).
