John Lloyd and Jim Northover met while studying at the London College of Printing (now London College of Communication) between 1965 and 1968. During this time they collaborated on several projects together, before working for various design businesses after graduating. In 1975, John Lloyd and Jim Northover set up their own design consultancy, Lloyd Northover. Early clients included arts organisations such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Arts Council, as well as the English Tourist Board. In the 1980s, they developed brand identities for large corporations including British Rail, John Lewis Partnership, and BAA (the international airport group). The 1990s led to an international expansion, with offices opening in Hong Kong and Singapore. Lloyd Northover joined the Citigate Communications Group in 1993, which later became part of Incepta Group plc. Following the death of Saul Bass in 1996, Lloyd Northover merged with Bass' design firm, Bass Yager, in 1997. Lloyd Northover took over the Bass Yager office in Los Angeles, and opened new offices in San Francisco and New York. An office was opened in Dubai in 2003. In 2013, Lloyd Northover merged with branding consultancy Holmes & Marchant, and adopted their name. The Lloyd Northover name was reintroduced in 2016.
