The story is told as a manga comic, using Western reading patterns, and tells the author's experience of the Hiroshima bombing through the narrative of a boy called Gen. The book has been translated into English by Project Gen. The back of the book contains reviews by Art Spiegelman and Robert Crumb. The book was published by Penguin in 1989 but Nakazawa's copyright dates to 1987.
