Description | The material mainly consists of records created as part of the Radio Jounalism Course at London College of Printing (now London College of Communication) between 1977 and 1985. This includes records created by Fred Hunter and other faciliators of the course, as well as a significant number of records created by the course students, primarily their assessed work.
There is also some material relating to other work which took place at London College of Printing in the 1970s and 1980s, along with work by Fred Hunter undertaken outside of the London College of Printing, which mostly consists of research material and conference papers.
The material comes in a range of formats, including paper documents, press cuttings and a small number of photographs. There is an extensive Audio Visual collection included in this archive, consisting of recordings by the students as part of their assessed work. |
Individual or organisational biography | Fred Hunter (1934-2012) founded the first university course in Radio Journalism in the UK. In 1977 he set up the Pre Certificate in Radio Journalism at London College of Printing (now London College of Communication). In 1982 the course was regraded to a Postgraduate Diploma.
Hunter was the first director of Independent Radio News, which led the way for 24 hour rolling news, and was one of the first assistant editors at LBC. He was also the first person to be awarded a PhD in Journalism from City University in 1984.

Custodial History | The archive was in the possession of Jill Hunter upon Fred Hunter's death in 2012. It was transferred to the Archives and Special Collections Centre at London College of Communication in 2015. Fred Hunter's books on journalism were dontated to the University of Bournemouth. |
