| Description | This folder contains material about the exhibition ‘Aurat Shakti [?tr from Hindi roughly: 'Women Power']: Asian Women Living in the Country’, held at Cockpit 3rd-26th March 1986, and touring to other venues.
It includes 6 photographic prints, one print shows several women on a market stall, the other is a portrait of the activist and trade union organiser involved in the Grunwick Strike, Jayaben Desai. There is promotional material for the exhibition at Cockpit Gallery, including the Press Release which notes that the exhibition has been compiled by Manjula Mukherjee, Amina Patel, and Mumtaz Karimjee. There is an invitation to the opening event 3 March [1986] at Cockpit. In addition are posters and a bochure for a series of events and exhibitions under the title, ‘The Black Experience’, produced by the GLC Race Equality Unit, Feb-Mar 1986, which lists ‘Aurat Shakti’ taking place at Cockpit Gallery. Three copies of Black Experience Arts Programme – Supplement. Press Cuttings 1986 -1989 are included regarding various iterations of the exhibition.
There is also promotional material for other iterations of the exhibition, including a poster 'Aurat Shakti: A Photographic Reflection of our Lives' held at Southwark Libraries. Two leaflets advertising a talk about Aurat Shakti at Centreprise in Dalston, 6 Jun [?1986], for Feminist Book Fortnight; One A4 poster advertising an exhibition titled Aurat Shakti at Centreprise, Dalston, May 20-Jun 8 [?1986]; One A3 poster advertising events for Feminist Book Fortnight at Centreprise, Dalston, including the talk titled Aurat Shakti.
Also included are 2 Exhibition comments pages, stapled [possibly from the exhibition at Cockpit] and 5 Exhibition comment pages from Gray’s Inn Resource Centre 2 – 30 Sep 1986. |
