Title | 'Washington Civil War Society Brinsworth House' |
Description | This series contains portraits of the Washington Civil War Society and retired residents of Brinsworth House (a residential and nursing retirement home for theatre and entertainment professionals), in the form of black and white prints, contact sheets, and negatives (which reveal that a portion of the images were taken on Ilford HP5 Plus 120 film).
The Brinsworth House photographs feature individuals and couples, usually smiling and seated in their home or garden. The Washington Civil War Society prints are occasionally candid, documenting the members in costume. The Washington Civil War Society prints are titled by printed labels on the back, while many of the Brinsworth House subjects’ names are handwritten on the back of the prints.
The series also features a few photographic prints taken in Los Angeles in the late 1970s to early 1980s; some of these are street photographs, but one interior shot depicts a married couple having their photo taken by another photographer in frame. Themes of voyeurism and multiple viewers recur in Dick’s work (such as in DSS/1/20, 'Animals inc. Horse Fair Ire.'), as noted in the Museum of London article ‘Scenes of London: the photography of Dick Scott-Stewart’. |
