Title | 'Gangs' |
Description | This series primarily contains black and white prints which depict members of various subcultures, named by Dick as ‘Mohicans’, ‘New Romantics’, ‘Blitz Kids’, ‘Rockabillies’, ‘Rockers’, ‘Jive’, and ‘Teds’ – this handwritten list of names appears on the back of a print, where Dick appears to have been sketching out plans for an exhibition. This portfolio will be of particular interest to those intrigued by London subcultural groups of the 1970s and 1980s, as it documents their activities, fashion and makeup.
Other groups featured in this collection include the crowd at a West Ham football match, a rally by the Anti-Nazi League, and one print which shows three men with shaven heads labelled as ‘The Grey Organisation’.
Recognisable venues featured in this collection includes The Blitz club of Covent Garden and the Elephant and Castle pub.
Please note that this series contains instances of nudity. Additionally, one image shows a group of young children performing the Nazi salute (the brief exhibition plan is mapped out on the back of this print). |
