DescriptionThis collection contains Helanca knit garments and knitting manuals including:

One hand knitted blue top.
One red machine knitted swimming costume and halter strap.
One red machine knitted sun top.
Two printed knitting machine brochures.

The garments were designed and made by Doris Walford in stretch nylon yarn for the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels, Expo 58. They were displayed in the Swiss Pavilion, and given to the maker after the exhibition.

Individual or organisational biographyThe yarn was called Helanca and was provided by a Swiss home-knitting machine company who made the Orion knitting machine. Walford was a well-known knitwear designer and was asked to design and make something using this new stretch nylon yarn.

Helanca is a type of yarn, now commonly known as Lycra®. The creation of Helanca yarn dates to the 1930s.
