Owens joined the then London School of Printing and Graphic Arts in 1956 as Vice Principal. During the 1960s Owens was later appointed Principal of its sucessor the London College of Printing continuing on for 11 years before retiring. Owens contributed towards the founding of Association of Teachers of Printing and Allied Subjects (ATPAS).
