Individual or organisational biographyMary Quant (11 February 1934 - 13 April 2023), English fashion designer who is best known for popularised the mini skirt and hot pants, and revolutionising women's fashion trends, most notably in the 1960s, by using innovative materials and designs. Quant studied illustration at Goldsmiths and with her husband, Alexander Plunkett-Greene, opened her iconic first boutique, Bazaar, in 1955 which was located on King's Road in London. It has since become a notable symbol of Swinging Sixties culture. By 1961 she opened a second Bazaar in Knightsbridge and went into mass production setting up the Ginger Group. She was at the peak of popularity in the mid 1960s during which she developed the Paint Box make-up. During the 1970s and 1980s she concentrated on make-up and domestic goods and in 2000 resigned as director of Mary Quant Ltd after a Japanese buy out of the cosmetics company. These cosmetics are examples of makeup produced by Quant during the 1960s, which emphasised bold colour trends in makeup and fashion at the time.
