In Renee's statement she speaks about how she was initially only going to submit one photograph; the photograph of a man walking down the street with his back to the camera. She says that this image showed relevance to her time at UAL, "walking along beautiful grounds daily but continually having to work extra hard to make my way". She includes a poem she wrote about how she felt like a "wanderer" during her time at UAL. She says how throughout her university experience she knew as a black female artist she would always have to work much harder to achieve good results. The reason for choosing to submit two images (the second being a front facing portrait), was that she wanted to show the beauty and strength of others and that this is the only kind of work she desires to create. The intesion behind the two images was to "represent me feeling lost, my insecurities and my drifting. As well as how I saw the University; beautiful, extensive and out of reach. Whereas, the black and white portrait represents a man who knows strength in a country that only know suffering and sees beauty in a time that only sees pain".
