DescriptionThis series pertains to photographs Jones took through the early 1960s. In 1961, Jones toured northern Britain as a ballet dancer, driving from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Sunderland. Jones was drawn to the landscapes they drove through, particularly scenes of coal searchers and spoil tips. He returned to northern Britain as a photographer for The Observer to document local working lives. His subjects during this period included shipbuilders in the Northwest and Dundee, dockers in Liverpool, as well as coal searchers and miners in Sunderland and South Wales. Many of these photographs, as well as some of his dance photography, are included in his 2002 photo essay Grafters.

This series is comprised of one photograph from this body of work. It does not form a complete collection of the material published in Grafters.
