Title'The Black House' Series
Description‘The Black House’ series is the controversial title given to a collection of photographs Jones took of the Islington-based Harambee community housing project for young Black people, developed and run by Caribbean migrant Herman Edwards. The photographic series resulted from a 1973 The Sunday Times Magazine commission to produce photographs for a front cover article titled, “On the Edge of the Ghetto.” For three years following the initial commission, Jones continued to take photographs at the house, supporting his project with personal funds, as well as grants from the Gulbenkian Foundation and the Arts Council of Great Britain (today the Arts Council of England).

In 1977, the photographs were exhibited at the Photographer’s Gallery in London under this title of ‘The Black House’, despite early resistance from Edwards. The title created a false association with the Black House of Michael de Freitas (also known as ‘Michael X’), playing on the negative media sensation that surrounded de Freitas at the time. The exhibition toured Britain until it was vandalised in Leicester.

Material is comprised of a selection of photographs from ‘The Black House’ Series. It does not form a complete collection of the material exhibited in 1977.
