DescriptionKenny Schachter ConTEMPorary was designed by Vito Acconci, and reminded the pair of 80's clubs
like Danceteria that were in turn inspired by the notion of utopias which fueled the developed an
80's art club aesthetic, with twice weekly events showing bootleg Matthew Barnery films and rock
videos, with poetry and noise events, video projection and performances by various bands along
with a permanent installation of amps and guitars where people were able to come in and just play
music together.
Koether discusses the intentional remodeling of the galley into a club with a specific visual
vocabulary that demonstrated the pairs signature, the Mylar curtains, Gordon's Mylar paintings,
Koether's paintings, appropriated and stenciled posters. The intention was to maintain the idea of a
social event, but to still insist on a recognisable visual vocabulary developed from both Koether and
Gordon's individual creative practices, the practice of making marks, expressions to express
movement, growth, feelings, to use a set of ideas applied to the tent as a layering of these
expressionistic gestures so that the tent in itself could be read as a painting.
Koether and Gordon present music by Rita Ackerman, MiraBilottes, Double Leopards, The Believers,
Hot Asphalt, Hawnay Troof, Angelblood and from the Reena Spaulings box set which was a remake
of White Light White Heat, made by female artists. (Reena Spaulings, is an ongoing collaborative
gallery & collaborative book character and collaborative fictional artist based in New York).
Koether and Gordon give an improvised performance with the backing vocals that are used in the
Reverse Karaoke installation and then open the floor for questions and answers. (Edited and
